Nepal
In Nepal, CBM supports a diverse mix of partners engaged in eye care, ear care, locomotor disability, rehabilitation, education, social development as well as formation and networking between different advocacy groups and disabled people’s organisations. Nepal is supported by a liaison office in India with a designated programme officer for Nepal.
Aims, priorities and goals
Aims
- Identify strategic partners in different mandates of CBM and focus on the establishment of more training centres in cross disability
- Support human resource development initiatives in the field of orthotics, medical care and community based rehabilitation to reach a higher percentage of the affected population.
- Focus on fruitful networking with government departments aimed at influencing policy initiatives.
- Develop a regional strategy for next 5 years based on present initiatives, and learnings.
- Eastern Regional Eye Care Program (EREC-P) is operational in eastern region of Nepal. This includes construction of super speciality eye care centre which will cater to around 70000 cataract patients from Nepal and Northern India.
Goals
- Establish programmes with stronger community base in the untouched and hard to reach areas which include the western and far western areas of Nepal.
- Developing linkages with civil society organizations to mainstream disability and formulate government policy.
- Reaching out to priority and hard to reach areas while strengthening and expanding strategic partner base.
- A shift to programmes encompassing community based rehabilitation and prevention of disabilities.
- Partnering with key players to explore opportunities of a combined effort/ joint funding.Capacity building of partners on resource mobilization, organizational development.
Studies have shown that people with cataracts were less likely to take part in productive activities than controls with normal vision. (Hannah Kuper and Sarah Polack, ICEH/LSHTM)
