The international community is beginning emergency relief operations in Myanmar following the impact of cyclone Nargis on May 3. cbm has been working in Myanmar for over twenty years to prevent blindness.

In Kotagiri, Tamil Nadu, India, a hospital funded by cbm serves plantation labourers and the local tribal population. The rate of new cataract cases in the region per year is estimated at 2500-3000 per million, with approximately 2000 new blind patients per year.
