Mwami Adventist Hospital is situated in Eastern Province of Zambia, 30 km from the town of Chipata. It is run by the Zambian Adventist Church. The eye department is presently the only service provider for eye care in Eastern Province, which has a population of about 1.3 million.
The estimated prevalence of blindness is 1%, of which 50% is due to cataract. Glaucoma and corneal scarring are the other leading causes of blindness.
The eye department comprises an outpatient clinic, an optical workshop, an eye drop production unit, a ward and an operating room. The ophthalmic clinical officer runs clinics and does surgery both at the hospital and on outreach.
