This programme is a merger of 4 projects in the Upper East Region of Ghana all owned by the Presbyterian Church. These are the Bawku Hospital Eye Department, Garu Community Based Rehabilitation Centre, the Sandema CBR Programme and Bawku Hospital Orthopaedic Department. In addition to these is a “Prevention of Childhood Disability Programme”.
A coordinator of the the new merged programme has been appointed and he will have a residence and office in Bolgatanga, the capital city of the Upper Region.
The eye care department is a mature project which due to the tribal conflict in Bawku has partially relocated to Bolgatanga into the PHC of the Church and continues to provide much needed eye surgery with outreach to much of the region. The department has a DO ophthalmologist and a cataract surgeon.
