A prevention of blindness programme which emphasises cataract surgeries, run by Christian foundation 'Fundación Hogar' in Cuenca, capital of the province of Azuay, South Ecuador.
Work started in two cantons of the province, Gualaceo and Sigsig, with a population of almost 100.000. CBM support consists in contribution towards running expenses, equipment, consumables and training of health promoters in basic eye health. Surgeries are carried out in the health centre of the foundation in Cuenca.
The medical director participated in CBM courses on community eye health in Colombia in 2002 and Ecuador in 2003 and 2007.
The foundation also offers other medical services and organizes medical campaigns, some of them with the participation of doctors and health personnel from other countries. The foundation conducted 499 cataract surgeries in 2008.
