The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is inviting comments on key areas of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This draft document refers to Article 12 (Equal opportunity under the law) and Article 9 (Accessibility) of the CPRD. Comments are to be submitted by 31 January 2014.

The United Nations Committee which monitors the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is now inviting all interested stakeholders to comment on the initial Draft General Comments, which were adopted during the Committee’s 10th session in September 2013.

The Draft General Comments refer to Article 12 – Equal recognition before the law and Article 9 - Accessibility. These initial drafts are the outcome of an extensive consultation process, involving a day of general discussion on each subject, as well as a high number of submissions from persons with disabilities, Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs), national human rights institutions and other stakeholders. As a result of this consultation process, these initial drafts incorporated the various perspectives from all contributions and are now available for comments. This is your chance to comment on the guidelines for disability rights relating to legal capacity and accessibility. These guidelines will then be used as the gold standard in monitoring the implementation of the CRPD.

Comments must be submitted by 31st January 2014 and will be taken into account when updating the Draft General Comments, they will be considered by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at its next session in April 2014. CBM looks forward to contributing to future draft commentaries.
