The 8 Millennium Development goals.

The UN Secretary-General’s report on the MDGs and post-2015 goals - A life of dignity for all: accelerating progress towards the Millennium Development Goals and advancing the United Nations development agenda beyond 2015 – was released in August 2013.

CBM welcomes the fact that the report following the trend of the High Level Panel report recognises that persons with disabilities are part of the one billion people who are still living in poverty and face serious deprivation in health and education as a result of inequality and exclusion.  The report calls on all actors to do everything possible to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by the end of 2015 and finish the work that is needed to secure the well-being, dignity and rights of those still on the margins today, as well as of future generations.

In terms of setting the goals for post 2015 agenda, the report states that the goals and targets should “take into account crosscutting issues such as gender, disability, age and other factors leading to inequality, human rights, demographics, migration and partnerships”. It also asks that the new goals measurement of success be not just based on economic growth but also focus on measurements of well-being.

Finally as part of the processes that will bring about the new development framework the report suggests that the outcome document of High Level Meeting on Disability and Development taking place in September feed into the overall new framework.
