Zambia

CBM has a dedicated Zambia country office and support programmes covering Community Based Rehabilitation, prevent hearing impairments in children and prevention of blindness and hearing loss.

CBM in Zambia

CBM has been in Zambia for 39 years, we target the people affected by disability by supporting programs, including health care, rehabilitation, education and livelihood opportunities run by local partner organisations.  With more than 100 years of professional expertise, CBM addresses poverty as a cause and a consequence of disability and works in partnerships to create a society for all.

Our MISSION is to work in partnership with Civil Society Organisations, government and Disabled People s’ organisations within a framework of inclusion to;
  • Empower people with Disabilities
  • Increase access to quality health care, education, rehabilitation and vocational services for Persons with Disabilities.
  • Promote for a more inclusive society in order to obtain greater quality of life for Persons with Disabilities.

About Zambia

Zambia is a landlocked Country, situated in South Central Africa.  The Country has a population of around 15 Million people, with a high dependence on Mining to run the economy.  Zambia is surrounded by 8 neighbouring countries. The Country has four Seasons, the Rainy season starting early November and ends in March, April to July is the winter season. August is the autumn season, September and October are summer. 

According to the recent Central Statistics office living Conditions survey report, the highest poverty prevalence rate is in Western Province with 82% followed by Luapula province with a Prevalence rate of 72%. Lusaka is at 40% poverty levels, this picture shows that the highest poverty levels are in rural areas.  Most of the people work in the informal sector especially the agricultural sector.  Zambia is generally a peaceful Country.

Where we work

We work in three provinces at the moment with a possibility of opening a new partnership in Luapula province.  The provinces we operate in are Lusaka province with three Partners who are Cheshire CBR, the University of Zambia Special Education Unit and Beit Cure. We also have a partner on the Copper belt Province, Kitwe Central Hospital Eye Department and last but not the least In Eastern Province of Zambia, St Francis Mission Hospital in Katete. 
We are currently working on the possibility of working with St Pauls Eye Hospital in Nchelenge, Luapula Province.

Our country priority thematic area

  • Mainstreaming: Development of a national disability mainstreaming action plan and budget
  • Strengthening CBR Services: Comprehensive CBR services with particular emphasis on children and youth, early intervention, education, livelihood in Lusaka & Copperbelt Prov.
  • Strengthening Zambian health system: particularly ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and rehabilitation services
  • Access to primary education for children with disabilities: Pilot inclusive special school for the deaf; sign language; teachers’ training
  • Youth With Disabilities’ access to vocational training programmes, work, livelihood: training of lecturers, Curricula development, assessment of market demands, placement and follow up
  • Strengthening DPOs to implement DID programmes
  • Establish a relevant and effective CBM presence in Zambia: CO establishment, donor mapping, access to local funding, networking, Proj. Monitoring, support mainstreaming and advocacy

  • Cheshire CBR in Matero, Lusaka, whose core business is Community Based Rehabilitation for Disabled children
  • Beit Cure Lusaka, Provides ENT services, Outreach hearing care and Surgeries for restorative procedures.
  • Kitwe Central Hospital Eye Department, provides eye care and corrective procedure services in the restoration of sight.
  • St Francis Hospital, Katete, Eastern Province, provides Eye care services.
