Cooperation on public policies for disability

The II International Congress on Health and Markets, organized by the Super Intendance for the Control of the Power of Markets of Ecuador, took place on July 7 and 8, 2016. The event gathered representative from the public and private sectors and the civil society to discuss about different topics related to the actual condition of the health market in the country.

During the afternoon of the first day, one worktable was dedicated to planning and implementation of public policies related to health and disabilities. Dr. Yorelvis Perdomo, National Director of Disabilities from the Public Health Ministry of Ecuador, Dr. Pilar Merizalde Technical Director from the National Councel for the Equity of Disabilities (CONADIS), Dr. Sandra Martini, professor from the Unisinos University from Brazil and Cristina Barrera, Projects Coordinator for Ecuador and Cuba of the CBM Latin American Regional Office took part of the debate.

Among the main conclusions and recommendations of the worktable of health and disability, was the necessary joint support from the diverse actors involved in the implementation and execution of pertinent public policies and the call to action to keep working to improve the quality of life of persons with disability.

Incidence of CBM in Ecuador

By now, CBM runs, in cooperation with local partners, three Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) projects and the strengthening of the National Network of CBR, working along the community and authorities to accomplish effective incidence of practical public policies in favor of persons with disabilities in an integral manner. Besides, CBM runs a project with CONADIS, the Technical Secretariat for the Inclusive Management of Disabilities (SETEDIS, in Spanish), and OVCI to offer support to persons with disabilities affected by the April 16 earthquake and aftershocks in the provinces of Manabi and Esmeraldas, in alignment to national policies and the national development plan.
