The MAHITA ophthalmology unit is dedicated to the children with visual impairment. CBM is supporting the refurbishment of the entire ophthalmology service and provides equipment for the theatre surgery, the patients’ ward, the waiting room, and the outpatient dispensary.
The opening of the MAHITA Pediatric Eye care and Training project
On the 04th of October 2017 the MAHITA ophthalmology unit - dedicated to the children with visual impairment - was inaugurated by Pr. Lalatiana Andriamanarivo, Public Health Minister of Madagascar and Martin Hahn, CBM Regional Director for Southern Africa. The opening comes in the frame of the MAHITA Pediatric Eye care and Training project and took place at the Teaching University Hospital CHU HJRA in Ampefiloha.
Through this project CBM is supporting the refurbishment of the entire ophthalmology service and provides equipment for the theatre surgery, the patients’ ward, the waiting room, and the outpatient dispensary.
The Minister expressed his great satisfaction and appreciation for the support CBM is providing in the area of health and disability in Madagascar. The Regional Director, stated that this achievement is one of the encouraging practical manifestations of the partnership agreement that was signed one year ago between the Minister of Public Health and CBM.
Capacity building for improved accessibility of children with visual impairment
The Minister expressed his great satisfaction and appreciation for the support CBM is providing in the area of health and disability in Madagascar. The MAHITA Paediatric Eye care and Training project also features capacity building of eye care professionals, who are trained on eye health modules within the National Institute of Public Health (INSPC). The project includes also the provision of consumables, the support to vulnerable patients and a computerization of the patients’ pathway management and the provision of package support to patients for paediatric eye surgery.
MAHITA Paediatric Eye care and Training project will continue to run until December 2019, thanks to the support of CBM Switzerland. The project will ensure improved accessibility of children with visual impairment to a quality comprehensive eye care services, particularly patients from vulnerable groups.
