Inaugural and restitution ceremony of new infrastructures and provision of materials to the inclusive school for students with visual impairment SEMAA in Toamasina on 18 August 2018

Inaugural ceremony at the Lutheran school SEMAA

The Lutheran inclusive school SEMAA, former school for blind students benefited from the project P3391 “Decentralization of the education for the visually impaired students”. The new infrastructure and the dotation of equipment and materials were celebrated on August, 18th 2018 in Toamasina. The project aimed essentially to improve the quality of the education provision in the school and the access of the blind children to education. The project was fully funded by the German cooperation institution that was channeled through CBM. The project features the equipment of the computer literacy class, the renovation and equipment of the library, set up of the playground and sport facilities (torball, volleyball, basketball), set up of four fish farming pools for vocational training and income generating activity. The implementation of a food drying unit is currently ongoing as part of the vocational training.

The educators received relevant trainings and quality didactical materials which will ease the teaching of the students with visual impairment. 21 visually impaired students of 171 students without impairment have access to the new equipped school. A strong awareness raising is planned by the staff, in collaboration with the local representatives of the Lutheran Church and the local authorities, in several sites of the East region in view to draw more children with visual impairment.

The ceremony was well represented

The inaugural and restitution ceremony was led by the MLC President, Pastor David Rakotonirina, and was well attended by the representatives the local authorities, CBM staff, the supported projects, the school staff, the parents, and the students. The different speeches enlightened on the correct use and on keeping the new equipment and materials in good condition.
