First Emergency Measures for Cyclone Amphan

Cyclone Amphan made landfall on parts of India and Bangladesh on 20 May and wrecked deadly havoc, lashing coastal areas with ferocious wind and rain. Nearly three million people were evacuated in the days leading up to the storm.
CBM is preparing first emergency measures in India in the wake of Cyclone Amphan. CBM partner Sundarban Social Development Centre (SSDC), which is currently also carrying out assistance to 800 households in the project region to mitigate the effects of the Corona pandemic, has already carried out an initial needs assessment in particularly affected coastal regions. SSDC reports severe destruction - electricity in the region is completely cut off, water sources are polluted, fields are destroyed and many houses are badly damaged. Health services are also severely affected and currently not functioning. With many families made homeless by the storm and now temporarily seeking shelter in cyclone shelters, there is a high risk that COVID19 infections will spread more in the coming days and weeks.
SSDC and CBM are currently preparing first emergency measures to help the population with necessary measures.
