The humanitarian inclusion standards for older people and people with disabilities provide guidance to include older people and people with disabilities in all sectors and at all stages of humanitarian action.
Background
CBM along with DisasterReady.org, Handicap International, HelpAge International, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Oxford Brookes University and RedR UK are part of the ‘Age and Disability Consortium’. The Standards were developed by the Age and Disability Capacity Programme (ADCAP), an initiative of this Consortium.
What are the Humanitarian Inclusion Standards?
The humanitarian inclusion standards for older people and people with disabilities provide guidance for what needs to be done in all sectors and at all stages to include older people and people with disabilities in humanitarian action. These standards are designed to be used in conjunction with other international standards such as Sphere and the Core Humanitarian Standards.
Older people and people with disabilities are routinely excluded from humanitarian response. Humanitarian actors have committed that assistance and protection will be provided solely on the basis of need, without discrimination. The Humanitarian inclusion standards for older people and people with disabilities recognise the importance of including those most at risk, and can help uphold the humanitarian principles. Using these standards will help organisations to successfully identify and reach those most at risk during a humanitarian crisis.
What is in these Standards?
The Standard consists of nine key inclusion standards, and seven sets of sector-specific inclusion standards for protection – water, sanitation and hygiene, food security and livelihoods, nutrition, shelter, settlement and household items, health and education. Each standard comes with key actions, guidance, tools and resources.
