Global Disability Summit
Making the Invisible Count
This February governments, businesses, development professionals, and Organisations of People with Disabilities come together at the Global Disability Summit to commit to change and do more to include over one billion people with disabilities, many of whom live in some of the world’s poorest countries.
As one of the leading expert organisations in Disability Inclusive Development CBM uses the Global Disability Summit (GDS) as a platform to raise global attention and focus on neglected areas and inclusive sustainable development. Therefore, CBM has made 33 commitments to change, particularly aligned with the community inclusion agenda of the summit. CBM will dedicate 315 million Euros over the next four years towards achieving these commitments, some of which include:
- Expand and strengthen our ability to disaggregate data in our programmatic work and in our organisation using globally recognised standards.
- Strategic investments to ensure our own community programmes are resilient and inclusive, driving Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DIDRR).
- Strengthen education systems at all levels so that they are inclusive of all from early years.
- Promote and contribute to universal health coverage for all in line with the 2030- Agenda and SDGs in the countries where we work.
CBM and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) are also hosting a side event on February 17 under the theme Making the Invisible Count. Experts will explore how States, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and NGOs can collaborate to collect and use disability disaggregated data and achieve the SDGs faster.
Topics include:
- Continuous and open spaces for ideation and collaboration - the role of research networks – Dr. Jörg Weber, Senior Global Advisor Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID) for CBM.
- Producing disability-inclusive data for children: Why it matters and what it takes – Dr. Claudia Cappa, Senior Adviser for Statistics and Monitoring in the Data and Analytics Section, at UNICEF headquarters
- Harmonizing Disability Data – Dr. Daniel Mont, CEO and co-founder of the Center for Inclusive Policy
- Disability Management Information System in Rwanda: Data for better lives – Fried Lammerink, GIZ Development Advisor and International Public Health Specialist.
Disability disaggregated data is required to understand the causes of exclusion and to develop policies and programs that enable the inclusion of persons with disabilities. Through strong research collaborations, CBM commits to further increase its understanding of disability inclusion and ensure evidence-based approaches and practices towards disability inclusive development, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and humanitarian action in low and middle-income contexts.
